Singapore Online Dating: Discover the Best Dating Sites and Apps in Singapore

Talent pool It's a mess. On most dating apps, you can only message someone once you both are matched but on OkCupid, it's open season. And from the quality of messages, there is no talent here.

A dating app for gay, bi, trans, and queer people, Grindr is the perfect online gateway for the LGBTQ community to socialise and connect. This geo-social networking app uses your phone's location to pick up fellow Grindr males in your area. It's safe space for those looking to come out of the closet, meet like-minded people and navigate through the queer world.

Blindfold masks or blurs profile pictures based on the premise that online dating can be embarrassing. In reality, hiding your face is not so much for discretion as it is about being unsure about how attractive the opposite sex will find you.

For instance, I used to heavily suppress expressing my love for kids out of fear that guys on dating apps would think that I were some baby-obsessed psycho who expects them to fertilise me ASAP. But with my partner, it was one of the first things we bonded over and it allowed us to identify a common trait from the get-go.

Have I been made to feel crummy by guys who found me unattractive based on their own ideals? Yes. Did I proceed to hate my own appearance and vow never to show my physical self on dating apps for fear of being forever alone? Nah, not really.

Facts. Also, a little ironic that the show that this quote is from was recommended to me by a guy I met through a dating app, who ended up smashing my heart into smithereens.Image credit: SineHub

The 2021 Marriage and Parenthood Survey, which polled more than 5,800 Singapore residents aged 21 to 45, also found that a limited social circle or lack of opportunities to meet potential partners were among the top reasons given by respondents for them not dating.

Both told TODAY that the increasing receptiveness towards finding partners online has been seen from before the Covid-19 pandemic in tandem with the growing popularity of social media and online channels, though pandemic-related restrictions on face-to-face gatherings may have made such approaches even more pertinent.

Having seemingly conquered the dating world overnight with brand messaging of female empowerment and the COVID-19 pandemic accelerating the rise of online dating, Bumble is also making plays into non-dating social and even business interactions. While this may work with an American audience, time will tell if its long-term strategy works in other countries as well.

Humans, unlike chimpanzees, have evolved over the years based on female sexual selection. This means that women generally make the call on whom to choose as a sexual partner. With financial independence offered to women today, the (online) dating scene may look skewed in the future, with an over-abundance of men joining dating apps only to be rejected or excluded from the dating pool unless they make in-app purchases.

According to Statista, the distribution of Tinder users (ratio of male to female) is heavily skewed towards male users, with over 72% of users on Tinder in the US being men versus 28% of women. Not only that, but there is also a massive perceived difference in motivations in using the app, with a disproportionate amount of men in a recent study seeking sex compared to women, who look more for relationships on dating apps.

The dating app, which has a presence in India, Australia, New Zealand and Southeast Asia, including Singapore and the Philippines, wants to normalise the idea of making romantic connections through an app, which still carries a stigma in several Asian cultures.

We also want to break the stigma that still exists in some Asian cultures around finding a romantic partner online. When dating apps came on the market just a few years ago, they revolutionised how people can meet each other, but there is still work to be done to normalise the concept of using an app to meet people. At Bumble, we have done this through a rigorous focus on safety through the development of product features like photo verification, private detector, video chat and more.

Bumble has taken a different approach in India, where the brand has produced a content series called Dating These Nights. The series, now in its third season, takes a chat-show-style approach and sees celebrities sit down together to discuss dating topics.

At Bumble, our mission is to create a world where all relationships are healthy and equitable, with our core values of kindness, respect and equality at the centre of everything we do. At every level of our business, our team is informed and led by these values and our goal to empower women on their dating journeys.

Since then, there have been a plethora of dating apps developed like Bumble, OkCupid, and Paktor. Even Facebook jumped on the dating app bandwagon and released Facebook Dating in 2018. Some apps even cater to specific target markets such as Minder which is similar to Tinder but for Muslims. It is estimated that the dating market is worth around US$12 billion globally.

Nevertheless, in recent years, dating apps still managed to make their way to ASEAN, especially among busy executives who prefer a faster way to meet people than the time consuming traditional approach. In 2019, Singaporeans spent US$7.1 million on dating apps, an increase from US$5 million in 2018 and US$3.9 million in 2017 while Malaysians and Indonesians spent about US$5.8 million on dating apps.

Besides, the only person who cares about any stigma is you. We all know people who have met and married from online dating. Do you judge your friends and find them lacking because they met online? Of course not. No one will judge you, either. Online dating is a great tool for meeting a potential mate, and more and more people are using it.

When Andy first emailed me, he explained that his online subscription had been inactive when I messaged him. But after weeks of unsuccessful attempts to meet women elsewhere, he re-upped his subscription, and my picture and message were there waiting for him as soon as he logged on.

It works the same online. Show interest. Have a thoughtful profile and good photos of yourself. This is applicable to men, too. The picture of you taking a picture of yourself in the bathroom mirror is sad. Get a friend to take a good picture to use for your profile.

Story by Junhao*Casey* and I met on an online dating platform. Though we did not have much in common, she was persistent in meeting up and I caved in. I invited her over to my house with the intention of simply playing games and getting to know each other better.

Story by Geraldine*I met Byron* on an online dating app and we hit it right off the bat. He had a sunshine personality and looked cute in his pictures. We texted back and forth for a few days, but I never had the time for a meetup. We were in the middle of a pandemic and as an insurance agent, it was a busy period and I met most of my clients through video calls.

Lesson: Dining-in may be suspended for now, but all it takes is a little spontaneity and creativity to still have a good time. Most of us try to show our best sides on dating apps, but just being yourself is also a sort of beauty that no others can replicate.

Holler Date is a voice dating platform that aims to amplify personality over a person's looks. Users hear short voice introductions of other singles. Photos are hidden unless a user uses their match points to reveal the photo behind a voice intro.

There are plenty of dating apps and sites to choose from, some of which you may already be familiar with. But knowing which ones are popular among the locals can help improve your chances of matching with one.

Since Singapore is such a small country, not many Singaporeans opt to sign up for international dating sites and apps. Some Singaporeans even took matters into their own hands and created dating apps that cater mostly to locals and those who are located in Singapore (i.e., foreigners). Here are two platforms that you can try:

Joshua Phua and Ng Jing Shen launched Paktor in Singapore in 2013. Since online dating was still new in Asia at the time, the app took off and is now available in Taiwan, Malaysia, Thailand, South Korea, Indonesia, and Vietnam.

As Muzmatch claims to be a halal dating app, it has plenty of features that help users date respectfully. For example, you can add a Wali, or chaperone, to your profile if it makes you more comfortable.

It was the first time we met. We connected on a dating app and arranged to meet at the food court at Marina Square (yes, I'm the sort who would go to a food court on a first date, especially one with such a nice view).

Online dating scams continue to rise, costing unsuspecting victims millions of dollars each year. Rather than simply sending phishing emails, cybercriminals are playing the long game to cheat people out of their money.

Scammers target people across different demographics on every dating platform possible. This means that regardless of gender, sexual orientation, age, or preferred platform, no one is off-bounds to a scammer.

With the rise of dating apps, scammers cast an even wider net for potential targets and automate much of the process, using bots to lure victims into scams. It's one of the reasons that online dating sucks.

A common line among online dating scammers is that they want to meet you, but when the time comes, there is always some unexpected issue. Since the scammer is not the person they claim to be, they don't want to meet in person.

Another online dating scam doesn't request money from victims, but turns them into "money mules". Rather than trying to get money from the victim, these scammers make you an accomplice in money laundering.

Sometimes, scammers may ask a victim to open a bank account for them. If your online suitor asks you to get involved in these types of financial transactions and exchanges, it's likely that they're a scammer trying to lure you into illegal activities. 2ff7e9595c
